Lawn Maintenance Tips & Advice

Power equipment helps to keep your lawn looking great with less effort, so it is important to keep these units in good condition to avoid more strenuous lawn maintenance. All engines need oil to run smoothly, so choosing the right oil will help prolong your mower's lifespan.

Types of Engines

Lawn mowers typically come with one of two types of engines: 2-stroke or 4-stroke. Adding oil to each engine type is an entirely different process that you must be aware of to properly care for your unit.

2-Stroke Engines

2-stroke engines have one tank that holds a combination of oil and gas that is typically premixed by the homeowner. The oils used for these engines are usually lighter-weight synthetic blends.

4-Stroke Engines

Lawn mowers with 4-stroke engines have two tanks, one for gas and one for oil. There are three main types of oil used for these units that you can choose from. These are conventional, synthetic blends, and fully synthetic, each featuring different benefits. The best oil to use depends on the type of unit you are using, the engine, and the outdoor temperature.

Choosing The Best Oil for your engine

Conventional Oil

Conventional oils are mineral-based products that are typically cheaper than other oils. This type of oil is best for homeowners that have an older mower model that may not react well to the newer, synthetic oils being produced now. These older engines may not be built to run on synthetic oil which can damage your mower and decrease its lifespan.

Full Synthetic and Synthetic Blends

Many of these blends use conventional oil as a base with further refinements added to develop the oil and optimise it for specific applications. Synthetic oils have additives including protection and better performance during high temperatures, longer breakdown times, and slower build-up of debris.

How Often Should I Replace My Lawn Mower’s Oil?

Many people change their lawn mower oil once a year, usually in the springtime when they start to use the mower more frequently. However, the right time to change the oil depends on the usage. If you use it frequently, you may need to change your oil more regularly. A ride-on mower typically should have its oil changed at around 100 hours of run time or annually - whichever comes first.

If you find your lawn mower not running as it should, you may want to look at getting the oil changed. However, if it is still causing issues, head to your local dealer to get it looked at.
