Best time to cut
When considering what season is best for trimming hedges, we suggest early spring for cutting back an overgrown hedge and summer for trimming to maintain shape and height. Try to trim your hedges when humidity levels are low to reduce risk of infection or disease setting in and killing your hedges. To avoid this, we suggest trimming in mid-morning or late afternoon as this is when the dew has evaporated and there is limited moisture in the air.
Try these techniques
Remember, the easiest way to get shape and height in your hedges is to start at the base and make large sweeping cuts in an upward direction. Bear in mind, overgrown hedges can handle a heavy trim, but be sure not to sever any of the main branches that feed the top.
When trimming the hedge sides, try to keep them wider at the base so that the light from the sun reaches the leaves at the bottom. Also, try to trim with the minimum amount of cuts possible to avoid bacteria and fungi entering the open wounds.
Cutting the top
When cutting the top, place the trimmer horizontal to the hedge top and gently cut away from yourself from front to back. To avoid any unsightly dips or cut outs, make sure you’re not placing too much pressure on the hedge trimmer when cutting from yourself.
